Break the Internet

Video installation Break the Internet is a humorous allegory of manipulation of the Internet, which as a constituent part of reality, is flooded with visual information of modern idols. One of the most famous online posts that brought the term “breaking the Internet” closer to users was a post by Kim Kardashian who posed naked for the cover of Paper magazine. This picture went viral with extreme reactions from the internet audiences. In her work, the artist reveals the secrets of the process How to break the Internet: by making a plate with the word Internet and a QR code for viewing the video ‒ user and the buyer get instructions for “breaking” it.

Dorotea Škrabo in 2014 completed her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of natural sciences and engineering, University of Ljubljana, majoring in Graphic and Interactive Communication. She continued her master’s degree at Akademija za likovo umetnost in oblikovanje in Ljubljana. Under alias Skrabzi, exploring the phenomena of the internet popular, the artist deals critically with current trends in her short videos. In addition to participating in numerous group exhibitions, she held her first solo exhibition “A šalim se” in 2014 at the Kino Šiška Urban Culture Center in Ljubljana. She presented her second solo exhibition, “Forbidden Photography”, to Slovenian audiences in 2017 in the gallery of the Institute of Contemporary Art of Aksioma, and to the Rijeka audience, in the same year, at the Filodrammatica Gallery.
