Selma Hafizovic is an artist living between Los Angeles and Zagreb. She holds an MFA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths University of London and BA from School of Visual Arts New York. Work situated her within American cinematic female archetype developments, embodying ritualized mapping of events, within a backdrop of contemporary entertainment, and mass media. Libidinal and consumer culture here are intertwined, myths and heroic being cross boundaries as they penetrate closed space or immobile occurrences, suggesting issues of control and voluntary and involuntary involvement. Ultimately one is left to question the position and responsibility of oneself as a spectator. Here we are required to be actively aware of our agency, or lack thereof, in the events that follow, as we find ourselves unwilling participants of pleasure. It is a spectator sport where issues of violence and cultural gender politics are replayed as if on a loop.
